2. HOW TO TRANSFORM OTHER ADDRESS LISTS TO SENDLISTS
1. HOW TO MAKE A SENDLIST FROM YOUR ADDRESS BOOK
a) Netscape
Open the file "address.htm" in the browser.
By default it is located in the directory
C:\netscape\navigator\ , which appears when you press ctrl+open if you
have not opened something else before with the same command.
If you dont find a file with that name there, go to your filemanager/explorer and use the "find file" function (in Win95 you find it in the meny bar: "tools" - search.). Then click on "address.htm" when it appears, and the addresslist will be opened.
Now you find a list of nicknames but no e-mail addresses. To get them, go to the source: In the menu bar, click on "view" and then on "Document source". Here you find the addresses in html code. To "purify" the list, do like this:
Copy the addresslist from the source on to a word processor that has "Find/replace" capability. If it also has the ability to sort, it is an advantage.
First SORT the document (in MS Word, you find the sort function under "tabels - sort text". You will now find that some garbage has been separated and you have a list of e-mails along with the nickname on the same line.
To separate e-mail addresses and nicknames, open the "search and find" function (Ctrl H in MS Word) and copy the word NICKNAME on to the "find" area and also the "replace" area. But in the latter, add the sign for carriage return in front of NICKNAME, (in MS word, the sign is: ^p. You can copy this directly on to the replace area: ^pNICKNAME ). Now click "replace all" and the nicknames will be separated from the e-mail addersses.
Now sort again, and you will have a list of e-mails only, preceeded by: <DT><A HREF"mailto Open "find and replace" and copy the above sequences on to the find area. Then go to the "replace" area and press the "delete" key. Nothing seems to happen, but when you "replace all" you will find that all the codes are gone. Finally replace the " sign with a comma.
Now you have a comma-delimited list that you can enter preferably in the "Bcc:" field of your e-mail (addresses entered here will not be visible to the receivers, while addresses entered under To: ora Cc: are visible).
b) Eudora
(This requires the use of a simple macro, that is possible to create in MS-word and in WordPerfect and other qualified word-processors. Instructions below)
The addressbok file is found in the Eudora main directory and is called : "nndbase.txt". Open this file and copy it on to your wordprocessor.
First delete the e-mailaddresses you don't want to use.
Then eliminate the nicknames/aliases.
To eliminate this you need a simple macro. All qualified word-processors have macro programs. They are very simple to use.
For Word users, you find an instruction how to create a macro in URL: http://www.psrast.org/eudmakro.txt. There you also find instructions how to use it.
If you have WordPerfect, the same instructions will be helpful. And also for other word-processors with macro funcion.
With the macro described in the URL you obtain a list ready to send.
2. HOW TO TRANSFORM OTHER ADDRESS LISTS TO SENDLISTS
The metodhology is essentially the same as described for e-mail lists above. Probably the lists contain the word "E-mail" or something similar before the E-mail address. It is nececcary to have the E-mail address on a separate line. This you do with "Find/replace". Replace the word, e.g. E-mail with the (code for Carriage Return)+E-mail. For MS Word, it is ^p). After that you sort. If there is any trash left after the e-mail address on the same line, it has to be deleted. If the "trash" always begins with the same word, fore example, "tel" you can proceed in the same way as when you moved the word "e-mail" to a separate line.
Now sort again, and the e-mail addresses should be purified. Check manually through the list. Finally, uses Find/replace to replace Carriage Returns with commas, and you are done. This method can be used for many kinds of address sources, including the Internet E-mail address directories like Bigfoot http://www.bigfoot.com/SEARCH (which is one of the best I think).
You just copy the address list on to your wordprocessor and use these hints.
