Members of an alliance that promotes GE foods

the Alliance for Better Foods in USA is making heavy propaganda for GE foods. Its information is unscientfic, flawed and seriously misleading. It ignores all the important reasons for caution. Worst of all, it maintains that GE foods are as safe as non-GE foods, which is an outright lie without any scientific basis. The Grocery manufacturer of America (GMA) is a member of this alliance.

A list of GMA member companies is found at their website http://www.gmabrands.com/membercos/index.cfm. We have found out that GMA has tried to block links to them from our website, so this link may not work: GMA members . If so, here is an alternate way: Copy the GMA URL to the address window of your browser. For your convenience, here is the URL on a separate line:

GMA Member Company Brands

We have made a list of brands from some of the most known food manufacturing companies that are openly supporting food biotechnology. It is less likely to find GE free products among their food items, so you are advised to assume that they may contain GE ingredients until the opposite is confirmed.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of GMA brands. In addition also companies that are not members of GMA may manufacture foods containing GE ingredients. The safest way to avoid GE foods is to use GE free brands, see GE free brand names.

NOTE: The list is found below the list of GE foods.

GE foods on the market

To find out if any of the listed brands may contain GE ingredients, you need to know what GE foods are on the market. So here is a list of presently approved GE foods (see also What GE foods are on the market):

Species Comment
Soy Very common. Likely to present in all foods declared to contain soy, unless explicitely declared that it is GE free.
Corn Very common. Likely to present in all foods declared to contain corn, unless explicitely declared that it is GE free.
Canola (rapeseed vegetable oil) Very common in North America especially.

Some tips about products not declared to be GE free

Soy is found in over 60% of all processed foods today. It may be found, among others, in infant formulas (mostly), ice-cream, bakery, meat products and pet food. When a food is "protein enriched", soy is commonly used. Soy oil is often used in cooking. It may be sold as "cooking oil" without declaration of the oil source.

Corn is found in many breakfast cereals, not only in the classical Kellogs "Corn Flakes" (found on the list below). Corn oil is another common product to look out for.

Canola (rapeseed oil) is found in vegetable oil mixtures, "wholesome" butter substitutes, margarines and shortenings.

In many processed foods, you find "vegetable oil" in the declaration. There is a considerable probability that it is soy, corn or canola oil or a combination. Considering that many of the processed food also contain soy, it is wise to avoid them if you want to be sure to GE free.

Because of remarkable lack of information about the contents in their food products, it has been impossible, other than in obvious cases, to make sure if the brands on this list contain foods that may be GE or not. If you want to be "GE-free" you are advised to check the ingredients carefully. The safest way is to eat organic food and that of producers who have declared a GE-free policy. For the US, Mothers of Natural Law have a very good list of GE free brand names.

The most comprehensive list for USA of GE foods and alternatives is the True Food List. For other countries you find lists at this URL: http://www.truefoodnow.org/gmo_facts/internationallists.html

NOTE: This is not a list of GE foods.

It is a list of some of the most common brands owned by companies actively supporting food biotechnology. They may or may not contain GE ingredients.
