Global crisis solutionA scientifically confirmed method to solve the world crisis is now becoming implementedSummaryThe world community is in a great need to improve cooperation considerably in order to be able to solve the pressing world problems of today. It has failed to do so, in spite of repeated serious warnings from leading experts calling for urgent action. A major reason for the failure is individual and national egoism. It causes ruthless greed which fuels corruption and struggle for personal power. In addition, much too often, there is an inhumane disregard for human suffering as well aggressiveness, intolerance and short-sighted thinking. All these behaviours are associated with physiological stress. It elicits a survival response that makes man narrowly and inhumany centered on self-assertion at the expense of everybody else and without consideration of later consequences of his actions. The great prevalence of such behaviours matches the fact that stress is endemic in the modern world. So theoretically, the most powerful way to improve global cooperation is to reduce societal stress. With conventional methods this would, if possible at all, take decades. But the world needs an immediate solution. Fortunately, extensive research of high scientific quality has demonstrated that there exists a method that effectively and rapidly reduces social stress and promotes peaceful cooperation between people. The World situation requires immediate solutionsDifferent problems and imbalances have been mutually reinforcing each other, leading to an increasing imbalance in the world. Scientists warn that the situation is approaching a critical state. United Nations has long foreseen and warned for all the problems, but world leaders have failed to do anything decisive about them. It is ironical that in this situation where there is an urgent need for very close international cooperation, the collaboration climate in the world has been such as to counteract effective measures. The main reason appears to be that short-sighted thinking, corruption, greed, aggressiveness and struggle for personal power is dominating the mentality of decision-makers in the world.
Stress a key factorSelf-interested, negative behaviours are associated with physiological stress, which is a reaction designed to mobilize our bodily resources for attack or defence. It is mediated through stress hormones and the sympathetic nervous system. An effective solution to present world problems needs to address the roots of physiological stress. Research has found that physiological stress in civilized life is mostly not caused by external conditions. The key factor deciding the level of stress is internal. It is the emotional basic trust’, the basic inner feeling of security that is developed in early childhood. It is an emotional background colour’, deciding how life is perceived. The more this background feeling is coloured by insecurity, the more the person is prone to interpret a situation as threatening or overpowering and thereby stressful. This colouring of perception occurs subconsciously without the person being aware of it. Most people are in a state of stressSuch inner insecurity (low basic trust) is very common. Persons with a high level of basic trust are rare in the modern world. They don´t react with physiological stress even when the work situation is highly stressful’, as they don´t experience that it is threatening (stress may occur even in them for purely physiological reasons if the body suffers from too little rest). This is opposite to the situation of people with low basic trust, who have a low stress tolerance. Not only the work but many of the everyday challenges, duties, problems and difficulties of modern life may evoke a feeling of insecurity or anxiety in them, thereby evoking the stress response. Therefore it is not surprising that recent research has found that chronic physiological stress is much more common than formerly realized. It is present in a very large proportion of the population, and is associated with major diseases, including cardiovascular disorders (arteriosclerosis and hypertension), adult (type 2) diabetes, immune system disturbances (autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis) and cancer. Also it is associated with sleep disturbances, depressions, anxiety and tensions, which today are very common. Stress and insecurity causes a feeling of uneasiness that prompts people to use various drugs that create a pleasant feeling, like nicotine, caffeine, alcohol or illegal drugs. The great extent of the use these drugs as well as of antidepressants and relaxing pills is another indication of the pervasiveness of the disharmony associated with stress (harmonious and secure people don´t need them because they usually have a spontaneous sense of happiness and pleasure). People may have a high level of physiological stress without any nervous symptoms or any feeling of being stressed’. Stress leads to egoistic and negative behaviorPsychologically, this conscious or subconscious background insecurity feeling activates an instinctive survival response. Because of this, the person becomes focussed on the assertion of personal interests and is prone to disregard what happens to others, that is, egoistic behaviour. This primitive fight for survival’ mechanism can manifest, for example, as aggressive self-assertion, power struggle and greed. In addition, research has found that stress disturbs intellectual functioning, leading to decreased intelligence and creativity. Stress in leaders may thus lead to short-sighted, uncreative unintelligent, inefficient and narrow-minded egoistic decisions with a low threshold to aggressive, inhumane solutions. Traditional solutions are insufficientIt is obvious that the opposite to stressful behaviour is necessary to stop a negative development of the world situation. That is, responsible, far-sighted, highly effective and intelligent, creative and friendly co-operation within nations and between nations. The deterioration process in the world since decades, in spite of the awareness of the problems, demonstrates beyond any doubt that none of the established international cooperation organizations has found any effective instruments or methods to develop constructive and effective cooperation. Something completely different is very obviously required to help out. Reduction of societal stress is the logical solutionThe connection of the cooperation problem with stress indicates a way out. While it was formerly believed that egoistic, aggressive, self-assertive behaviour were evil’ traits, engrained in the personality and therefore impossible to improve, science now has realized that this behaviour is an expression of stress, resulting from a lack of inner security. Research has found that when the inner security level increases, the egoistic stress behaviour’ decreases. Recent research has found transformations to humane, caring and altruistic behaviour even in destructive, aggressive and hyper-egoistic criminals, when a steady feeling of inner security is developed. Every individual is apparently potentially altruistic, far-sighted, responsible and humane. If there were a way of collectively increasing a permanent feeling of deep inner security in the members of a society, a decrease of collective stress would occur. Thereby a transformation to more humane and cooperative behaviour would appear in the whole society. With the traditional understanding of psychology, it is impossible to achieve such a profound effect even at an individual level. Therefore such an effect may seem unthinkable at a collective level. It would require that individual minds would permanently experience deep inner security at a fundamental level. However, recent revolutionary insights about the nature of consciousness indicate the possibility of collective effects. The new physics indicates a new approachAlready, the great founders of Quantum Physics, including Erwin Schrödinger and Max Planck, thought that this new physics indicated that consciousness is a fundamental aspect of nature, not just a result of brain functioning. In the last few decades, increasing numbers of top physicists have begun to support this view, especially since the introduction of the Unified Field Theory of Quantum Physics. Actually, the unified field has a unique fundamental property, self-referral, which is characteristic of consciousness. So, from the standpoint of physics it does not appear inconceivable that there is a field of consciousness through which individual consciousnesses could be influenced at a large scale. Princeton university research indicates a field of consciousnessIt is encouraging to find that recent research seems to support the conception of consciousness as a field. For example, research at the renowned Princeton University in USA has made an extraordinary discovery. Extensive rigorous studies, including millions of trials over a period of 20 years have indicated that random event generators[4] tend to deviate from random behaviour under human influence[5]. Some studies indicated an action at a distance. This inspired, in 1988, scientists to establish a global network of random event generators and to monitor their behaviour day and night. Remarkably, the random event generators of this network deviated highly significantly from their normal random behaviour at the September eleven 2001 terrorist attack. See the diagram.
These random event generators have reacted in similar way to a considerable number of dramatic global events like earthquakes and other catastrophes that involve many people. The probability that the deviations from random behavior are due to chance is now less than one on ten millions[6] (it has steadily decreased over time with increasing numbers of recorded events). Most rigorous statistical methods have been applied to exclude any possible sources of error. This research is just a particularly striking example of numerous findings that indicate that there is a field of consciousness through with collective effects can be mediated. A solution confirmed by leading scientistsAgainst this background it is not so surprising that several scientific reports are indicating that it is possible to decrease collective stress, that is, changing the perception of life collectively in such a way that people feel more secure. As for today, about 50 studies have been published, reporting an effective reduction of societal stress through a certain method. About 50 world-leading scientists[7]have confirmed the quality of the research proving its ability to lower the general level of stress in society. The method in question is the Transcendental Meditation (TM) and TM-Sidhi Program of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Journal of Conflict Resolution at Yale University, USA, which is one of the most respected conflict research journals in the world, has published remarkable findings[8]. So-called coherence-creating groups, practicing the TM-Sidhi program together in a group, improved a composite life quality index in Israel highly significantly. There was a close relation between the group size and the effect, see the diagram below. This index included Israeli war casualties in the on-going Lebanon war.
In another study, the war in Lebanon was monitored throughout a 27-month period. During this time seven assemblies with coherence-creating groups were held. The result was highly remarkable. The war intensity index, including war causalities and deaths decreased at an average by 70% during the assemblies. The probability that this effect was due to chance was less than one on 1019. The study reporting this remarkable result has been approved by independent scientific advisors (peer reviewers) of a leading scientific journal. A great strength of this and other studies on coherence-creating groups is that they use public records or other public data that cannot be manipulated[9]. The said peer reviewers are especially skilled at finding possible sources of errors but found no important ones in any of the published studies. The common pattern in the experimental studies is that criminality and other indicators of social stress decreased, while cooperation, creativity and responsible behavior increased significantly. The studies have repeatedly found powerful stress-reducing effects even at an international scale. Therefore there are good reasons to expect that this method can not only to stop the accelerating deterioration of the world as a whole but also to turn it into positive development.
Super String theoretician suggest an explanationJohn Hagelin[10], an internationally renowned Quantum Physicists thinks that this effect might perhaps be explainable with the most recent theories of Super String theory, which involves so called shadow matter associated with the Unified field. This matter is able to interact with electromagnetic fields such as in the brain. He therefore thinks this matter may be the link between the physical brain and the Unified Field, which unifies everything in the universe, including all people in a society. From this standpoint it does non seem unconceivable that this field could transmit the deep harmony experienced in the coherence-creating groups to the rest of the society. Harmonious atmosphereIn any case, these groups seem to be able to create an atmosphere that promotes an increased feeling of security and harmony in people, thereby abolishing the “stress mentality” so that the responsible, caring and cooperative behaviour tendencies inherent in human nature can prevail. No excuse for any delayThe reason for the delay of the application of this solution has not been scientific, rather the opposite. It has been the kind of behaviour that delayed the acceptance of Quantum Physics among physicists for decades after it was proven behind the shadow of a doubt[11]. It is the common irrational resistance of man to accept even the most compelling evidence if it is perturbing his world-view. However, considering the present world situation, there is no reasonable excuse for waiting one day to apply the only solution that has solid scientific documentation and might be effective enough to turn the tide in time. Therefore we are happy to find that permanent coherence creating groups are presently being built up in 24 selected countries (2006). They are powerful enough to change the present negative trends and to initiate a profoundly positive development of mankind based on stable peace and constructive cooperation between all nations in the world. The plan is to expand this effect to all countries as soon as possible.
