Proposition to the European Commission

Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Application of Science and Technology (PSRAST)

Suggested measures for reducing the risk of mobile phone radiation damage in young people

PSRAST suggests the following measures regarding mobile phone usage for people below 20 years of age because of the findings that they run a considerably increased risk of developing brain tumors.

  • Require the mobile phone industry to immediately produce mobile phones that only can be used for sending and receiving SMS messages.

  • We suggest a law is considered that allows mobile phones, designed for SMS messages only, to be sold to people below 20 years of age. Parents or others who circumvent this law should be punished.
  • We suggest that all countries are urged to seriously warn young people through the education system about the dangers of mobile phone radiation. Special information packages could be made for union-wide usage.

If you are still in doubt about the hazards, we want to emphasize that the body of evidence is by far strong enough to justify such restrictive measures. We want to alert you that there exists evidence that research sponsored by the mobile phone industry is severely biased. If independent studies are considered only, the evidence is by far strong enough to justify resolute action for restricting usage of mobile phones. The industry-sponsored scientists are heavily leaning on cancer risk studies, that are misleading because the exposure to radiation has been too short to generate cancer, that is less than ten years.

These scientists are trying to fragment the picture, only focusing on isolated stduies. This is unscientific and illogical. To get a proper understanding of the dangers, it is necessary to consider all the different observations on the effects of mobile phone radiation, including especially the studies on DNA. When all the facts from different approaches are considered, it is evident beyond any shadow of a doubt that mobile phone radiation is harmful and, most importantly, that the harmful effects appear far below the present threshold values. See our website that is designed for informing laymen.

Scientists who deny that mobile phone radiation is harmful are either incompetent or corrupt. For more, see "Corrupt Science" at our website. Excerpt:

"Outright falsifications of data by scientists, corrupted by corporations, have been revealed as well as cases where scientists have been forbidden by their sponsors to publish findings that would damage the interests of the corporation"

It is time for the governments of the European Union not to let corrupt scientists and powerful lobbyists prevent them any more from taking necessary measures to stop the incipient epidemic of brain tumors and other serious health problems that is the inevitable result of unrestricted use of mobile phones.

  • We suggest that the European Commission alerts the national governments about the serious problem of corrupt scientists denying the hazards of mobile phone radiation in spite of the strong body of evidence about its harmful effects.
  • We suggest that only truly independent scientists are used as governmental advisors, They should sign a notarially confirmed statement that they are not funded by the mobile phone corporations, with a heavy fine (eg a million EU) to be imposed if it is found that they have lied
  • We suggest EU-wide actions are initialized to restrict mobile phone usage and to alert people about its serious dangers, with the suggested law that only allows mobile phones for SMS messages to be sold to people below 20 years of age, as a first step.

Sincerely,
Jaan Suurküla, M.D.
President of PSRAST

Reply from EU DG Information Society and Media

The head of section, Mr Rainer Zimmermann, replied that their "independent scientists" have found no evidence proving that mobile phones cause cancer. See the reply of EU.

Our conclusion

Considering the strong evidence that proves that mobile phones cause cancer, the scientific experts used by EU are either seriously incompetent, or more likely heavily biassed in favor of the interests of the mobile phone industry. As said above, the evidence are so strong now that it is impossible for a scientist to conclude that mobile phones are safe if he is competent and honest.
